Mary & Rick Knea, Steve Prager
Jonathan Fulwood, Nick Monteiro

Mary Knea, vocals: Mary’s a retired music educator and continues teaching private voice in her Meridian home. Her lIfe (and singing) began in the Great Lake states, continuing to Athens, Greece where she graduated High School. She was offered a full scholarship to Warner Pacific College in Portland, OR (now WP). She continued her studies at Portland State and Multnomah University. Mary has enjoyed singing a wide variety of genres with some amazing musicians and has recorded at Watershed recording studios in Nashville. Mary formed Synergy Jazz in 2017 and says she’s living her dream of making music with her bass player, best friend and husband, Rick Knea

Steve Prager, guitar: Steve Prager is an accomplished jazz guitarist, author, and retired USPS postmaster. For 25 years, Steve served in the US military band as a guitarist and small group leader. Steve hails from the Arkansas Ozarks by way of Salem, OR, is married to the lovely Susan, and resides happily in Caldwell.

Madeleine Vandel, vocals, attends Northwest Nazarene University, and has grown up singing in churches. In high school she performed at small house concerts in Leavenworth, Washington. She also sings in the University Choir, plays in the orchestra at NNU and takes voice lessons with Linda Schmidt. She has a background in musical theater from numerous Leavenworth Summer Theater productions, high school productions, and the production of Into the Woods at NNU. Her jazz group was recently featured at The Riverside Hotel on Jazz Mondays, sponsored by the Idaho Jazz Education Endowment organization.

Quinn Van Paepeghem, guitar, is enjoying his 41st year as a music educator.  He is currently the Director of Jazz Studies at Northwest Nazarene University, directing the Northwesterners vocal jazz ensemble, assisting in the music education program, teaching Choral Methods and Jazz Guitar. Quinn grew up in the Boise valley, graduating from Meridian High School.  He holds Music Education degrees from the University of Oregon, and Boise State University.  Prior to his university appointments, he taught high school choral music for 34 years. Quinn is an avid jazz guitarist, and heads his own jazz quintet with his wife, Shirley.  He has performed with the Cascade Festival of Music All-Star Big Band, (Bend, OR), and played for Rosana, Eckert, Karrin Alyson, Pete Cristlieb, Alyssa Schwary, Bobby Shew, Rob Verdi and others.

Gregorio Gonzalez, bass, is from Kent, WA and is the seventh child of a family of nine children. He has been playing music since fourth grade. He started out playing orchestral music, and in church. As an adult he has branched out to various genres including funk and jazz. He is the bassist for 12th Jazz and NNU Northwesterners Jazz Choir.

Rick Knea, bass: After spending many of his younger years playing acoustic guitar, Rick picked up the electric bass in 2004 and hasn’t looked back since!  Having played many genres of music from rock, country, and contemporary worship, it wasn’t until he met his soon-to-be wife in 2006 that the seed was planted to begin his studies in jazz and upright bass.  After many years of study and wood-shedding the dream of accompanying his wife in a jazz group came to fruition when they founded Synergy Jazz in 2018.  Today Rick enjoys working from home, spending time with his lovely wife, and is continually working on improving his skills and technique!

Jonathan Fulwood, drums: Usually noticed first by his red hair and large red beard, Jonathan Fulwood is a drummer, civil engineer, and outdoorsman from Meridian, ID. After being a percussionist and church drummer throughout middle and high school, Jonathan began to explore the jazz drumming world during his time at Northwest Nazarene University where he was involved in multiple ensembles. Now, with over 12 cumulative years of drumming experience and hundreds of various gigs, Jonathan still finds himself loving every time he gets behind the kit. He currently splits his time drumming between Tree City Church and Synergy Jazz Boise.

Nick Monteiro, piano: Nick “lives” music and loves life in Boise, ID, the heart of the Treasure Valley. With a heavy background of classical music, jazz, and contemporary genres, Nick writes and arranges in styles across the board, but brings the same light and life to each stage.
