The Switch In Time Jazz Orchestra:

The Switch In Time Jazz Orchestra is the outgrowth of a band that was formed several years ago as a “reading” band, getting together a few times a month to play for the pleasure and practice of the members. Reading sessions were held early in the evening in the living room area of an assisted living facility in Caldwell, Idaho, where a few of the residents could sit and hear the music. It was, from the beginning, the intention of Wayne Daniels, the founder and leader of the group at that time eventually to start performing for audiences. A few years later, when Wayne moved away from the area, leadership was assumed by Joel Brotman, then the lead alto sax player in the band, and the band assumed the name “Switch In Time,” to reflect the broad scope of its collection of compositions and arrangements. written over many decades. Many were of music written during the first half of the 20 th century and rearranged during the second half of that century and into this one. The repertoire could be called “Old Wine in New Bottles.” When the band performed in the spring of 2022 at the esteemed Gene Harris Jazz Festival, it was listed as the Switch In Time Jazz Orchestra, and the name has stuck.

The members of the band span several generations and diverse backgrounds, including active and retired music educators, veterans of military bands, retired law enforcement officers, sales executives, attorneys, health care professionals, students and others. Most of its engagements have been for charitable, educational, religious and other eleemosynary institutions. It now meets twice a month, either to explore its library of music together and to keep their chops in shape, or to prepare for upcoming performances as they arise.

Local up and coming High School Jazz artists Jack Fickel, Jackson Hicks, Landon Taylor, Kylee Overlin, Dylan Nunn and Joshua Haynes are under the tutelage of BSU’s award winning professor, pianist, composer, and educator Alex Sjobeck.
