How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying

Annie McKinney – Director

The first live theatre experience she ever had, was when her grandmother took her to see Boise Music Week’s The Music Man in 1997. Ever since, she has been hooked. Her grandmother, Barbara Oldenburg, was a big part of BMW going all the way back to the 50’s where she starred as Anna in The King and I and many other roles. Her grandmother also directed in the 1980’s and served on the board until she passed away in 2005. After getting her Theatre Education Degree She landed her dream job as theatre teacher at Meridian High School. She was inspired by her students to get back out on the stage and she made her way back to BMW in 2017, acting in the Ensemble for Mary Poppins (alongside her husband). This return inspired her mother (also named Barbara Oldenburg; It can get very confusing) to return to the stage after a 31 year hiatus for 2018’s The Music Man. Her mother Barb and she have both worked on every BMW show since (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Into the Woods, State Fair, Cinderella, and Fiddler on the Roof) in roles both on and off stage. Boise Music Week is part of our family’s heart in a very big way. She would like to dedicate this show to both Barbara Oldenburgs. Thank you for inspiring a world of Musical Theatre in her.

Annie has loved working with this cast, which is also her first opportunity directing all adults. You may have seen her on stage; favorite roles include: Stepsister Charlotte in Cinderella (BMW), Granny/Cindi’s Mom in Into the Woods (BMW), Miss Flannery in Thoroughly Modern Millie (BMW), or Alice Beineke in Addams Family (Boise Little Theatre). Off stage she has assistant directed Something Rotten (BLT) and State Fair (BMW), as well as costumed Something Rotten (BLT), State Fair (BMW), White Christmas (BLT), Music Man (Huckleberry Star), Puffs (BLT), and Heathers (BLT).

She is honored to have won the 2025 Velma V Morrison Outstanding Performing Arts Educator because she is most proud of her role as the theatre teacher at Meridian High School where she has directed dozens of shows and has been inspired by her students daily to get out there and do theatre. She is honored to have so many former students in this production. She would like to thank her friends and family for supporting her love and passion for the theatre. Special thanks to her mom for always helping hug or iron or feed her when she needs it. Extra special thank you to her husband Stephen for keeping her laughing even when the candle is burning from both ends. You’re the one I want to go through time with.

I’ve been involved in theater in Boise and the surrounding area for well over several decades now. I’ve been in a few Boise Music Week productions, including “Guys and Dolls” in 1998, during which I met my wife, Michelle! I was on the radio in Boise for 40+ years, but am now retired. Michelle and I are the proud parents of four, and grandparents of two. Michelle still does some theater, but I haven’t acted since 2021. My favorite role ever has been Elwood P. Dowd in “Harvey” at both Knock ‘Em Dead Theatre and Boise Little Theatre, for which I won Best Acting Awards both times. I am very honored and excited to be part of this show. Best part of it all is that I did not have to memorize any lines! Easiest show I’ve ever done. No makeup or costuming either! Enjoy “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying!” (Somehow, I can relate😊😉)
